Sobre o táxon

The hibiscus is the national flower of Hawaii and Malaysia. In the Azores, it is a common shrub in public and private gardens, farms and forest parks, where it is used both as a single plant and as a hedge.[6]

This taxon has the following properties: antiparasitic, antipyretic, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, anti-ulcer, hepatoprotective, antigenotoxic, anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant, and antitussive. [5]

Descrição

Evergreen shrub up to 4 m high. Leaves alternate, ovate to ovate-lanceolate (up to 15 cm long), acuminate, dentate-serrate, sometimes lobed. Solitary flowers in the axils of the upper leaves; 6 to 9 linear-lanceolate involucral bracts; campanulate tubular calyx; 5 petals (2.1- 12.7 cm long), red or reddish darkening towards the base, but in ornamental cultivars the corollas may have simple or folded petals and the colors vary from white to various shades of red, yellow and orange. Staminal column excerpts revealing 5 capitate stigmas at the end. [7]
