Sobre o táxon

Bamboo appears as one of the exotic and romantic elements that was used repeatedly in 19th century gardens in the Azores. However, this species, which is rarely cultivated in Europe, can be seen in the University Campus Garden. Like other species of bamboo, it is also used in other regions to make braids. [4]

Descrição

A perennial, cespitose herb with woody, erect stems (6 to 8 m high and 3.5 to 5.5 cm long) and drooping at the apexes. Cylindrical internodes (40- 98 cm long). Stem leaves with leathery sheaths, light green striped at the base of the stalk, then brown and deciduous, with brown hairs, unequal auricles and marginally setose, toothed or ciliolate auriculate ligule (1-1.5 mm long), narrowly ovate to triangular limbs, narrower than the sheath, erect and acuminate. The branches at the nodes support the bamboo foliage with linear limbs (7-14 cm x 0.9- 2.2 cm) resembling short petioles, the limbs connecting to their sheaths. Flower spikelets in fascicles at the nodes of the panicle branches. The fruits are caryopses. [4]
